The Corps Commandant General, Neighbourhood Enlightenment and Safety Organisation (NESO), Dr Sani Aliyu, in his keynote address, commended the achievements of President Buhari for his achievements in degrading terrorism in Nigeria, which still remain a global challenge.
Aliyu gave the commendation on Saturday night in Abuja at the Institute of Security and Strategic Studies (ISSS) 2022 Security Excellence Awards and Investiture ceremony of new members of Board of Fellows.
Aliyu in the paper titled “Contentious State of Nigeria Insecurity and its Malign to National Security,” said Buhari’s efforts had recorded some successes.
“I must start by congratulating President Buhari for his achievements in degrading terrorism from all time high of 9.12 to in 2015 to 8.2 in 2022.
“This means, Nigeria from 3rd most terrorised country in the world to current 6th position in 2022 and death caused by terrorists attacks dropped by 92 per cent.
“As well as we are also seeing the decline of banditry activities in the country.
“Although there is still much needed to be done in this regard therefore, I will also say kudos to all the security chiefs and the affected States Governors for their robust collaborations in bringing to fore their various experiences and strategies which anchored the relative peace and security in the country today.”
Aliyu, however urged President Buhari to come up with in his wisdom to come up permanent and sustainable solution, especially in the security agencies working together in proactive manner to combat terrorism without any constitutional malady.
He urged president Buhari as matter of national urgency adopt NESO to become government agency in tackling terrorism, taking stride from former president Olusegun Obasanjo who adopted Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps.
Aliyu said this would consolidate Buhari’s gains in the war against terrorism, ensure he jealously guide his great achievements in degrading terriorim.
He advised the media to ensure that when security breach occurs, it’s attendant uproar in the public domain is done with decorum, bearing in mind the Nigeria state.
Aliyu said that the much propaganda given to such incidence embolden the perpetrators, provided them with situation update.
He added that such also showcased the impact on the people and society to them “exposes that the State, lacks proper security coordination, weakness, poor technological deployment if any, and also failure of proactive strategies if any, thus portraying national security in a bad image.”
Aliyu said that in most civilized countries globally, measures were taken quietly without much hullabaloo.
He said that was to give the citizens some sense of security but not without informing them of the true state of affairs, adding that unnecessary hipping by the media is out of the way.
“It is conducted in a manner not to give-in the pressure of devastation, in other words not to demean the capacity of the state actors.
“It is universally acknowledged that security is everybody’s business and so ‘am using this platform, calling on the institute of security and strategic studies to stretch its outreach to the Nigeria media.
“It is onus on us to jealously guide and protect the interest of our beloved country at all times.
“America has the highest crime rate (11,877,218 per annum) in world but manages the situations through the media and that still makes the country attractive to all, projecting proactive security network more and demeaning security breaches simple and sinker.”
Also in his remarks retired Director, Rural Electrification Agency, Chucks Josiah, advocated security education should be well propagated in Nigeria.
Josiah also advised all new fellows to be active in the activities of the institute.
