Kano election: NNPP petitions ECOWAS, EU, others over court judgments

The New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has petitioned the ECOWAS Commission and European Union over recent judiciary judgments on Kano State governorship elections.

The National Secretary, Johnson Ladipo, reading the party’s protest letter at ECOWAS Secretariat in Abuja, said the petition was imperative in seeking justice as well for the peace of Kano State, considering its present security situation.

Ladipo said while NNPP had proceeded to the Supreme Court to seek redress for the party and Gov. Abba Yusuf of Kano State whose victory was upturned both at the Tribunal and the Court of Appeal, it was also concerned about the peace of the state and Nigeria.

“Kano is the second largest city in Nigeria with a population of over 20 million people real time.

“It has the second largest consumption of all energy types and is host to thousands of kilometres of AKK gas pipelines to Niger Republic, North Africa and Europe for the benefit of a better world.

“Kano is also host to the largest textile and food markets in Nigeria and Africa – from the Darwanau food market to the Kwari and Singer markets.

“Kano indeed is home to the largest horde of unemployed youths whose only hope is the mandate they freely gave to the NNPP and Yusuf.
“The political and economic significance and sophistication of Kano to Nigeria, Africa and the world economy cannot be over-emphasized,” he said.

He said all the party was asking for was justice for the party, Yusuf and the people of Kano State.

Oladipo called on all embassies and the International Court of Justice to advice President, Bola Tinubu as well as the Nigerian judiciary and Supreme Court, to do justice to Kano State, the NNPP and Gov. Yusuf.

He also called on the Vice President, Kashim Shettima, Northern Governors forum, Northern Senators forum, Northern House of Representatives Forum, students, traditional and religion groups and their leaders to advise the judiciary to ensure that justice is properly served at the Supreme Court.

Speaking on behalf of the NNPP State Chairmen, Mr Ofeyemi Oluwatosin, said that the protest would be replicated in all states of the federation.

Mr Seydou Bangoura, the Director of Administration and General Services at the ECOWAS Secretariat, while addressing the protesters advised them to continue to be peaceful and uphold the tenants of democracy.

“One of the tenets of democracy is good governance. I have received your message, and it is going straight to our management,” assured Bangoura.

The party’s petition letter was also submitted at the United Kingdom and Canadian Embassies
