The Creative Director, Potters Gallery Initiative, Mr Donald Unanka has rated the Federal Government high in its response to commitments made at the Global Disability Summit.
Unanka made the assessment at a stakeholders technical review meeting on Federal Government commitments in Abuja.
He said that government in the last two summits made seven key commitments to the disability community.
He said that they include areas of productive health, inclusive education, economic empowerment and employment.
The director also said that the commitments included data and a disability legislation among others.
“So I will say that, based on the seven key commitment that government made, the area of having a disability law, government has gotten a pass mark.
“So the next step is to ensure that disability law is fully implemented and to also ensure the disability commission that is part of the law is fully empowered in order to do its work in ensuring disability inclusion in all the sectors,” he said.
Also speaking, Ms Samdra Yebi, the Executive Director, Family Center Initiative for Challenged Persons said that many public buildings were yet to comply with the section of the Act that mandate accessibility for PWD.
She said that there is a need to set up a task force to compel managers of public building to comply with the Act.
According to her, it’s been five years since the law was enacted saying that the period of grace is over.
“If you just tell some Nigerians, go ahead and do something and you are not putting any concrete tax force in place to push them to do it, they won’t do it.
“So my own opinion is that the government should put up a tax force in place that will go from building to building, anyone that is found wanting should face the law according to what the disability Act says because they’ve given them enough time to do this,” she said.
