In the ever-dynamic landscape of Nigerian politics, few figures have sparked as much debate, intrigue, and speculation as Malam Nasir El-Rufai, the immediate past governor of Kaduna State. A man of formidable intellect, unyielding principles, and a reputation for shaking the status quo, El-Rufai’s recent political maneuvers have become a focal point of national discourse. From his role in the emergence of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to his controversial ministerial nomination, his meetings with elder statesmen, and his recent defection to the Social Democratic Party (SDP), El-Rufai’s actions have left many wonderin: What is his endgame?

The Road to Tinubu’s Presidency and the Ministerial Controversy

El-Rufai’s political journey in recent years has been nothing short of dramatic. As a key member of the All-Progressives Congress (APC), he played a pivotal role in campaigning for President Bola Tinubu during the 2023 elections. His strategic insights and grassroots mobilization were instrumental in securing victory for the APC in many parts of the country. Given his contributions, it came as no surprise when President Tinubu nominated him for a ministerial position, a move widely seen as a reward for his loyalty and political acumen.

However, El-Rufai’s confirmation by the National Assembly hit a snag. Reports of security concerns and alleged opposition from powerful figures within the government stalled his appointment. This development sparked a wave of conspiracy theories, with many suggesting that certain individuals in the Tinubu administration viewed El-Rufai as a threat and were determined to keep him out of the cabinet. Whether these theories hold water or not, the fact remains that El-Rufai’s exclusion from the Federal Executive Council (FEC) marked a turning point in his political trajectory.

The Meetings with Elder Statesmen and the Search for Relevance

In the months following his ministerial setback, El-Rufai embarked on a series of high-profile meetings with Nigeria’s political heavyweights. From former presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Ibrahim Babangida to ex-military leaders and influential politicians, these engagements were seen by many as a calculated move to reposition himself within the political ecosystem. Some interpreted these meetings as an attempt to build alliances, while others speculated that El-Rufai was laying the groundwork for a broader political agenda.

The SDP Defection and Its Implications

The most significant development in El-Rufai’s recent political journey is his defection to the Social Democratic Party (SDP). This move has been met with mixed reactions. For the SDP, El-Rufai’s entry is a cause for celebration, as it brings a seasoned politician with a strong following into their ranks. For the APC, however, his departure has been downplayed, with some party members dismissing it as the action of a man who has “lost relevance” in the ruling party.

Interestingly, the SDP holds a unique place in Nigeria’s political history. It was the platform under which President Tinubu himself emerged as a senator in 1992. This historical connection adds an ironic twist to El-Rufai’s defection, fueling speculation about his intentions. Is this a genuine realignment, or is it a strategic move to position himself as a formidable opposition figure?

The APC’s Underestimation and the Need for Strategic Engagement

One of the most critical lessons in politics is never to underestimate an opponent. Yet, some within the APC seem to be doing just that by dismissing El-Rufai’s actions as inconsequential. This is a risky approach. El-Rufai is a political heavyweight with a track record of influencing outcomes. His ability to galvanize support, coupled with his deep understanding of Nigeria’s political terrain, makes him a force to be reckoned with.

Those who argue that El-Rufai’s moves are driven solely by his inability to secure a ministerial appointment miss the bigger picture. In politics, perceived slights and unmet expectations can be powerful motivators. If El-Rufai feels sidelined or undervalued, it is entirely plausible that he would seek to challenge the status quo. The APC must recognize this and respond with tact and strategy, rather than dismissive rhetoric.

The Role of Opposition in a Democracy

The comments from some opposition figures, such as former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido, have also added to the discourse. While Lamido’s remarks reflect his vast experience in politics, they also highlight a broader issue: the lack of a vibrant and cohesive opposition in Nigeria. Despite his political standing, Lamido’s attacks on El-Rufai do not bring anything substantive to the table. A strong opposition is expected to hold the government accountable, push for the yearnings of the common people, and uphold the tenets of democracy. Unfortunately, this is not the case at the moment.

El-Rufai’s move to the SDP could be a step in this direction. By joining a party with a history of challenging the status quo, he may be positioning himself to play a key role in shaping Nigeria’s political future. Whether or not he succeeds, his actions underscore the importance of competition in a democracy.

The Future of Nigerian Politics and the Need for Multi-Party Democracy

As the political drama unfolds, one thing is clear, Nasir El-Rufai is a master strategist who understands the intricacies of Nigerian politics. His recent moves should serve as a wake-up call for the APC and other political actors. Rather than dismissing him, they must engage with the realities of his influence and the potential implications of his actions.

Personally, I believe in multi-party democracy. It has more benefits for the people, as it promotes healthy competition, ensures accountability, and provides a platform for diverse voices to be heard. Just as competition in business drives innovation and efficiency, competition in politics keeps leaders on their toes and ensures that the interests of the people remain at the forefront.

President Bola Tinubu, one of the most skillful politicians of our time, understands this well. His rise to the presidency amidst all the turbulence is a testament to his strategic acumen. Similarly, Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State has shown remarkable political skills, not only in emerging as governor but also in uniting opposition members in the State, with the exception of El-Rufai’s loyalists.

The Political Roadmap

Politics is a game of skill, strategy, and foresight. Underestimating an opponent, especially one of El-Rufai’s caliber, is a mistake that could have far-reaching consequences. The APC must rise above petty arguments and focus on strengthening its position through inclusive and strategic governance.

For Nigeria’s democracy to thrive, we need vibrant opposition, robust debate, and a commitment to the principles of fairness and accountability. El-Rufai’s actions, whether motivated by personal ambition or a desire for political realignment, are a reminder that democracy is not a one-way street. It is a dynamic process that requires constant engagement, competition, and collaboration.

As a concerned member of the APC, a former National Chairman of the Youth Party, and one of its founders, I urge my party to approach this development with wisdom and foresight. Let us not make the mistake of underestimating El-Rufai or any other political actor. Instead, let us focus on building a stronger, more inclusive political system that serves the interests of all Nigerians.
