The Civil Society Groups for Good Governance (CSGGG) a coalition of 180 CSOs, has tasked critics of constituency projects by National Assembly members on proper verification to avoid snare campaign.
In a statement on Wednesday, the President of the coalition, Mr Dominic Ogakwu said that proper verification was necessary to secure the image of the institution, integrity of members as well as keep citizens well informed.
Ogakwu urged citizens and political actors to exercise caution against unverified allegations, smearing, and campaigns of calumny.
According to him, blanket name calling and unethical politicking with constituency projects, defeats the aim of democracy.
He said that the call became necessary following recent unverified online reports that claimed that Sen. Agom Jarigbe was awarded several contracts for constituency development.
He said that according to the reports, contracts for motorcycles, computing equipment, emergency rice supplies, and solar-powered streetlights in parts of Cross River North were awarded to a company allegedly linked to the senator and his family.
He said that the development raised concerns on adherence to public procurement rules and potential conflicts of interest.
Ogakwu said that independent assessment by CSGGG however, showed that Jarigbe’s interventions have produced measurable and widespread benefits across Ogoja, Yala, Bekwarra, Obudu, and Obanliku Local Government Areas of the state.
”Our independent assessment confirms tangible results in the senator’s legislative and constituency work. While oversight is essential to democratic governance, it must be balanced, fair, and evidence-based.
”Our details showed that Jarigbe’s record demonstrates legislative diligence and a sustained commitment to equitable development, with significant improvements in education, infrastructure, water supply, electrification, healthcare, agriculture, human capital development, and community empowerment across the state,” he stated.
He urged the public and political actors to base discourse on verified facts, emphasising that discussions should focus on accountability and development outcomes rather than unsubstantiated claims or political smears. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
