The Centre for Educational Empowerment and Orientation (CEEO Nigeria), an NGO, has commended the Federal Government for excluding candidates seeking admission into Education and Agriculture programmes from the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) requirements.

This is contained in a statement issued on Friday in Abuja by the Executive Director of the organisation, Mr Oyebisi Davidcrown.

Davidcrown described the policy as a bold and strategic intervention aimed at revitalising Nigeria’s education system and strengthening national food security.

He said the decision demonstrated responsive leadership and a practical understanding of the country’s developmental priorities.

Davidcrown noted that removing entry barriers for students interested in teaching and agriculture signalled government commitment to sectors critical to national growth.

“This is a commendable and courageous policy direction.

“By removing barriers to entry for students who are willing to pursue careers in education and agriculture, the federal government is making a clear statement that these sectors are national priorities deserving urgent attention and investment,” he said.

According to him, the teaching profession has witnessed declining interest over the years due to limited incentives and systemic challenges.

He added that easier access into teacher education programmes could help reverse the trend.

Davidcrown said the policy would improve teacher supply, enhance education quality and attract more young Nigerians into the profession.

The executive director also said the inclusion of agriculture reflected recognition of the role young professionals must play in achieving food security, economic diversification and sustainable rural development.

He expressed optimism that the initiative would increase enrolment in teacher education institutions and agricultural programmes, improve availability of qualified teachers and promote youth participation in agriculture and agribusiness innovation.

While lauding the initiative, Davidcrown urged the federal government to complement the policy with scholarships, bursaries, internship opportunities, mentorship programmes and improved welfare incentives for students and professionals in both sectors.

He reaffirmed the organisation’s readiness to collaborate with government agencies, educational institutions and other stakeholders to support policies promoting equitable and quality education nationwide. (NAN)
